At the start of this new year, I am, exceptionally, putting one of my old heroes in the spotlight.
Arnett Cobb was not a revolutionary nor an exceptional saxophonist; in fact, he always remained a swing tenorist, someone from the generation of Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Ben Webster.
From 1942 to 1947, he played in Lionel Hampton's band and then started his own septet. In 1950, he underwent surgery for a back problem, and shortly after his recovery, both his legs were crushed in a car accident. From 1959, he began performing again, and from the 1970s, he resumed touring. Cobb was tireless and made many recordings, standing between his crutches as he blew his solos—a driven tenor man. He passed away at the age of 71, on March 24, 1989.
