53. Oytilo 2

In the early 17th century, Oitylo, and slightly further east Kelefa, were the most important centers in the Mani. Over 400 families live in Oitylo (over 300 in Kelefa). Due to persistent conflicts, more than 700 inhabitants leave and eventually arrive in Genoa, where they are allocated land on the island of Corsica by the Count of Genoa. One of the most important clans, the Mavromichalis, would play an important role in the liberation of Greece from Turkish occupation in the early 19th century.
